Activation is not simply the last screen in onboarding. It is the earliest meaningful behaviour that shows a user has experienced enough value to return. The distinction matters: completion is easy to count, while value is what makes the product durable.

Start with retained users

Choose a retention window appropriate to the natural rhythm of your app, then compare the early actions of retained and non-retained cohorts. Look for behaviours with a strong relationship to return, enough volume to matter, and a plausible link to the product promise.

Test the candidate

A useful activation metric should be understandable, measurable without fragile instrumentation, and movable by a product intervention. Validate it across acquisition channels, platforms and user types. A metric that only predicts retention for one small segment should not steer the whole roadmap.

Good activation metrics describe an experienced moment of value—not a screen the business hoped users would visit.

Put it to work

Once selected, make the metric visible by cohort and track the time users take to reach it. Product work can then focus on reducing genuine friction before value, rather than shortening onboarding at any cost.
